Welcome to the Governors Web Pages
A description of the way in which the College is governed and the vital role that the members of the Board of Governors and its standing committees play is given below.
The College has a powerful reputation for the quality of its provision to adults, locally, regionally and nationally and for its role in community regeneration. This claim is borne out by the three highly successful government inspections that have been undertaken since 1995, the latest one being completed in November 2006. The College has been awarded Beacon Status by the LSC in recognition of the excellence of its provision.
The College is a company limited by guarantee and a registered charity. The Members of the Board of Governors are the directors of the company and as such are registered at Companies House.
Members of the Board have the opportunity to make a significant contribution to the future direction and focus of this College.
The Board of Governors, which currently has a membership of 20 (See Constitution) is responsible for setting the strategic direction of the College and for approving financial and management policies and plans.
Membership of the Board (which is unpaid except for travel expenses) is usually for 4 years, with renewal for further periods of 4 years subject to certain criteria being fulfilled. It involves a commitment to attend four meetings per academic year held between September and July.
In addition the Board has a number of standing committees that meet at least once per term:
- The Policy and Finance Committee (meets twice per term)
- The Quality Committee (meets once per term)
- The Audit Committee (meets once per term)
- The Search Committee (meets once per term)
- Remunerations Sub-Committee (meets as required)
Members of the Board are expected to serve on one of these and also attend a minimum of two Governors' Development Seminars per annum. Governors are also invited to social events and encouraged to link with staff in the areas of the College's work that most interests them.
