Northern College Learning Journey
My learning journey started back in June 2008, the day I attended Northern College on my very first short course. I suffered badly from severe mental health issues and just to attend the College was a massive step forward for me at a critical point in my life.
Whilst at College I remember feeling a sense of warmth, friendship, support and kindness like I had never known elsewhere. The staff were all welcoming, kind and compassionate and nothing was too much trouble. I remember how concerned I was regarding my mental health issues and how I felt scared to speak up and talk about my problems, but how these were diminished by caring support workers and committed tutors, and also the knowledge that the College catered for all types of physical and mentally ill students eased my worries too.
After completing my short courses (all 8 of them) I finally plucked up the courage to apply for the Northern College Diploma Programme, This was to be the best decision of my life. I was awarded a non-residential student place starting in September 2008 and finishing in May 2009, a nine month hard slog to achieve what I thought was unachievable. I quickly progressed on the course at such a rapid rate, eager to learn and study. My assignments were always in at least three weeks before the deadline and each and every one of them were of degree standard (level 4). When it came to receive back my last assignment (my 12th piece of work) I had finally done it! The diploma course completed.
I was awarded the Sheffield Hallam University Certificate in Combined Studies and awarded the Northern College Student of the Year for all my achievements. Later, in May 2010,I was also Highly Commended in the Adult Learner of the Year Award for high achievement and outstanding study.
So, why did I choose Northern College? To answer that honestly I didnít choose Northern College it chose me. Northern College saved my life. It brought me back from the darkness of mental illness and turned me into an intellectual adult learner who now strives for more in life. I left high school with very little but Northern College gave me back everything I didnít achieve at school and college. I say to anyone considering contemplating applying for the Diploma course that there are no boundaries to your achievements here and there are no barriers to learning too regardless of what you think. The College is inspirational and a fabulous place to study, there are way too many people to list who helped me achieve my dream goal and move forward in life, but they know who they are, and I thank them all from the bottom of my heart.
